Dramaturge Kaku Nagashima -- Bringing collaborative works to the audience

In Japan today, the role of the dramaturge on the creative scene in the performing arts is drawing an increasing amount of attention. These professionals who support directors and the overall work of theater production has long been an integral part of the theater world in countries like Germany, and now amid the increasing diversification of theater in Japan as well, dramaturges are playing an important role in the planning and execution of productions in a growing number of cases. In addition to being a translator, Kaku Nagashima is active as one of the still rare freelance dramaturges in Japan, working with a variety of directors to bring the audience a series of plays with critical contemporary relevance. We spoke with Nagashima about his work and the potential of the dramaturge in Japan today.
